3 Factors Affecting Your Asphalt Roof’s Lifespan

The average lifespan of an asphalt roof is 15 to 40 years. However, this may vary depending on several factors, one of which is the quality of the shingles used.

In addition to the quality of the shingles used, the factors that can affect how well an asphalt roof ages are:

1.The Orientation of the Roof

Since they’re more exposed to heat from the sun and ultraviolet (UV) rays, roofing systems with south-facing slopes have shorter lifespans. Roofing systems with this orientation also tend to be more vulnerable to wind damage.

Here’s a pro-tip: the granules embedded in asphalt shingles protect them from damaging UV rays. But for added protection against UV damage, we recommend choosing light-colored shingles. The closer a shade is to white on the color spectrum, the more heat it reflects. And, as an added benefit, the less heat your roof absorbs, the lower your electricity costs.

2.Roof Slope

Since water tends to pond on flat surfaces, roofing systems with low slopes shed water slower. Not to mention they’re more exposed to UV rays than roofs with residential slopes.

3.Suitability to the Climate

No matter how durable a roofing material is, it won’t last long in a climate it’s not suited to withstand. Fortunately, asphalt shingles can handle a wide range of climates, which is one of the reasons why asphalt is one of the most popular roofing materials in North America. However, depending on your area’s climate, other roofing materials might be a better choice.

To learn more about the roofing materials suited to your area’s climate, consult one of your local roofers. Since they’re familiar with the local climate and building codes, they can make better recommendations.

Extending Your Asphalt Roof’s Lifespan

Routine maintenance is a must if you want to keep your roof in good condition and is key to extending its lifespan. How often should your roof be inspected? The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) recommends having your roof inspected at least twice every year, ideally in spring and fall.
