Do You Need To Move Out During A Roof Replacement?

Should you move out of your home during a roof replacement?  If you have a home office, you might want to start looking for temporary accommodation. After all, construction noise can be distracting. Normally, however, there’d be no need to move out during a roof replacement. That’s because a roof replacement would only take less than a week to finish, provided there are no significant weather disruptions.

If you plan on staying in your home while your roof is being replaced, here are the precautions you can take to minimize disruptions to your routine:

residential roofing replacement

Move Your Car Out of the Driveway

Nails and all kinds of roofing debris could fall onto your driveway when your roof is torn off. To protect your vehicles from damage, make sure to park your vehicles on the other side of the street. Doing so also frees up space that contractors can use for setting up their equipment.

Mow Your Lawn

Some of the nails might end up falling on your front lawn. Mowing your lawn before the start of the roof replacement will make it easier for your contractors to clean up construction debris.

Remove Picture Frames Hanging From Your Walls

Expect your walls to shake while your old roof is being torn off. Remove picture frames and other pieces of artwork to prevent them from being damaged.

Keep Your Pets in a Quiet Room

Shaking walls, construction noise and the presence of strangers might stress out your pets. Keep them in a quiet room to keep them from becoming distressed.

Set Ground Rules With Your Kids

Make sure your kids don’t go outside during the roof replacement, and explain to them what’s happening. Designate safe spaces in your home, and set extra ground rules with your kids.

Vet Contractors

One more thing: don’t forget to vet contractors before hiring them. Here’s a vetting tip: The number of years a contractor has been working in the industry should give you a good idea of their level of expertise.
