Popular Myths About Asphalt Shingles, Debunked

Asphalt shingles are popular across the country because of their appeal and durability. They’re one of the most cost-effective roofing options because of their long lifespan and performance. Still, many homeowners get misled by false information about asphalt shingles.

These are some of the most popular misconceptions about asphalt shingles and the facts behind them.

Asphalt Shingles Contain Asbestos

Back in the day, asbestos was used in making asphalt shingles. But since it was proven in the 1960s that asbestos causes respiratory irritation and illnesses, roofing manufacturers have stopped mixing asbestos into asphalt shingles. You can rest assured that today’s asphalt shingles are free from asbestos. However, we recommend having your home tested for asbestos if it was built before the 1960s.

Shingles Lose Granules Quickly

Shingle granules give the roofs their color and protect against ultraviolet (UV) rays. Many people believe granule loss happens a few months after installation. This is true to a certain extent, that is to say, asphalt shingles do shed granules after installation. However, these granules are only an excess from manufacturing. If your roof has continued to lose a significant amount of granules for a long time, call your contractor because this could already be a sign that something is wrong with your shingles.

Dark-Colored Shingles Are Bad for Energy Efficiency

Dark-colored asphalt shingles absorb and retain more heat, but they won’t necessarily decrease your home’s energy efficiency. Light-colored shingles are indeed more practical than dark-colored ones because the former can reflect UV rays and reduce radiant heat absorption. However, with good attic insulation and ventilation, dark-colored shingles won’t be able to have a significant impact on your home’s energy efficiency.
