Also called the Re-Roofing Registration Bill, HB 2101 would have paved the way for a government registry that consumers can use to verify contractors’ information before hiring them. Proponents of the bill believed that this would help consumers prevent roofing scams.

The legislation, however, failed to move on to the Senate since private organizations like the Better Business Bureau already provide this type of service. It was also pointed out that HB 2101 didn’t really address concerns about roofing scams. The bill was also deemed more beneficial to larger roofing companies than smaller independent businesses.

Despite this bill failing, you can still protect yourself. You should practice caution when hiring a contractor. While the industry is full of dependable roofers who deliver quality work, there are still some unscrupulous businesses that might take advantage of you.

To avoid being a roofing scam victim, the first step is to verify the businesses you’re considering. Make sure their office address and contact details are real. You can also look for customer reviews online to learn more about the quality of service they provide. Lastly, ensure the roofers are properly insured, and never make a decision to hire them on the spot.
