Why You Need Class 4 Impact-Resistant Shingles

Do you live in an area with hail and strong winds all year round? Then, chances are, you need impact-resistant roof shingles. They are lab tested and hail-resistant, and preserve your building envelope. NorthGate® Class 4 Impact Resistant Shingles provide a lot of benefits.

Impact-Resistant Shingles

Durability

The NorthGate asphalt shingle is styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) modified, resulting in a “rubberized” characteristic. It includes a Class 4 Impact Resistance rating, the industry’s highest. It boasts of superior weatherability and improved granule adhesion. These make it, without a doubt, the most durable shingle in the industry. If you live in an area that’s prone to hail, then this is definitely the shingle for you.

Impact Tested

A Class 4 UL 2218 Impact Resistance test drops a 2-inch steel ball from 20 feet up to see if the shingles will fracture. With a regular shingle (Class 3 impact resistant), cracks and ruptures appear. With Class 4 roof shingles, there are no signs of splits or tears.

Pliability

NorthGate’s two-piece laminated fiberglass-based shingles are tougher with a stickier surface. Press it and a non-modified asphalt shingle against a pipe to test pliability. The other shingle breaks while the NorthGate bends back against the pipe. Its SBS composition keeps the shingle from cracking, even in 0 degree temps.

Certainteed® NorthGate® Designer Shingles

CertainTeed® NorthGate SBS modified asphalt shingles are still unmatched by standard asphalt shingles. The rubberizing aspect of SBS allows for greater flexibility. They resist cracking even in extreme cold weather, allowing roofers a year-round application. SBS also offers superior granule adhesion, a key defense against the elements. They feature Class 4 impact resistance, cold-weather flexibility and greater granule adhesion. They also provide enhanced crack resistance, weatherability and shrink resistant.
