For all its advantages in strength, durability and, quite recently, looks, metal roofing systems are not the easiest material to install – that is, compared to other common roofing options like asphalt shingles and cement tiles. You can’t entrust a metal roof installation to just any builder. Your roofing company, as well as its contractors, must undergo specialized training in the proper handling, installation and maintenance of metal roofing systems.
As it is, the growing demand for this versatile product is proof of its numerous benefits. Here are the benchmarks of a good metal roof installation.
Don’t be tempted by companies who over-promise but underdeliver. Free roof estimates are pretty much an industry standard, but should not be taken to mean you’re dealing with a reliable company. Ask for a list of completed jobs and references from past clients. Request copies of all relevant licenses and certifications along with bonds and proof of insurance. This may not be directly related to the installation of a metal roof, but it should weed out the bad companies right off the bat.
Metal roofs work better with medium- to high-pitched roof assemblies. Low-angled roofs are prone to water penetration particularly at the fasteners and joints where openings are more common. Your roofing contractor should recommend a slope that’s at least 2.5: 12 or higher. You can also use slopes of 0.25: 12, but this must be accompanied by effective waterproofing measures. Otherwise, you can expect frequent leakage problems from your roof.
